Jaehun Park’s virtuele werken gaan in op de huidige problematische gebeurtenissen op aarde door in te zoomen op slim gekozen metaforen en objecten. In deze gesimuleerde videowerken vertaalt hij fysieke substanties met behulp van 3D-scantechnologie naar virtuele substanties, zoals polygoon structuren en puntenwolk systemen (een set datapunten in de ruimte). Hij gebruikt hyperrealistische 3D-rendering om in massa geproduceerde objecten – als vaten van kapitalistische ideologie – in een verlaten digitale ruimte te ensceneren of om ze te situeren in ‘ritualistische’ installaties die onmogelijke natuurlijke fenomenen uitbeelden.
Park deinst niet terug voor de complexiteit in zijn werk. Met zijn simulatie-algoritmen, gemanipuleerde en geënsceneerde virtuele landschappen en installaties onthult hij de façade van de echte wereld – oververzadigd met afschuwelijke en glorieuze momenten van kapitalisme. Hij studeerde aan de afdeling schilderkunst (BFA, MFA) aan de Seoul National University en deed een Master Artistic Research aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag. Jaehun Park: Real-time Limbo
For Jaehun Park, an artist based in Amsterdam, the present world is a real-time limbo, or perhaps purgatory. Purgatory, that middle space between heaven and hell according to certain religious world views, seethes with souls seeking tempering and purification by fire as a necessary step toward heaven. In one part of the world, a building collapses in a bombing, while half-way across the globe, 30 million subscribers to a YouTube consumer-review channel are abuzz at the launch of some new product. Capitalism, rapture, and despair come and go, all tangled up in this real-time purgatory.
Jaehun Park sees in capitalism elements that are analogous to religion. He connects scenes of bottomless human desire and catastrophes to hellscapes and post-apocalyptic landscapes. A digital sculptor, animator, and simulator, Park is the Creator here of a virtual world constructed using CGI. This world is devoid of humans. Only objects on which human desire is projected exist in it, objects imbued with the ideologies of humankind. These document the human world in their entanglement. The function of the objects in Park’s video work are inverted to reveal, in strange and bald fashion, human life in the absence of humans.
The video installation Event Horizon digitally recreates images from various places on earth that have been devastated by war and catastrophe. The most primal form of nature, rocks; the ruins of buildings in war-torn Syria and Palestine; the nuclear reactor at Fukushima; the particle accelerator known as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN; Confetti to celebrate a joyous occasion – through these five sequences, the work presents sites of actual tragedies as virtual locations. Through the use of innovative methods like photogrammetry and point clouds, these sites become territories of the imaginary that are as unpredictable as event horizons. The immense scale and showy images created by the latest technologies depict tragedies unfolding on the other side of the world.
Fancy capitalist objects merge with supernatural phenomena to present us with a hellish, desolate space. In the video Overheated Windmill, a windmill keeps turning, soundlessly, despite having caught fire. Windmills are a representative symbol of the Netherlands, a beautiful cultural heritage that hides their original function and history as one of the foundations upon which the construction of colonies in other parts of the world by the Dutch rested in the country’s Age of Discovery. Park makes an analogy between windmills with their obscured historical contexts and overheated capitalism. In Ritual for the Night, we see a suspended censer, possibly a Catholic thurible, carpets from the Middle East, medical hoses, broadcast cables, and metal chains. A BBC report of an Israeli attack on Palestine is projected onto the surface of the shiny censer. A Syrian friend of the artist meets his brother, who he had not seen for ten years due to the war, while playing the war game Battlegrounds. The two brothers, unable to communicate over phone or the internet without fear of being censored and thus having this sole means of connection, are victims of war and beneficiaries of a war game.
Human greed and imagination have turned reality into something that surpasses purgatory. Viruses, excessive speculations in real estate, the consumption of luxury goods, accidents, disasters, fatalities arrive day after day, in an unceasing tidal wave. News conveying these stories are to some hellish, and to others heavenly. The planet, overrun by capitalism, is polluted, quantified, wasted, and discarded. Nature is wiped out, leaving only numerical real estate. Ugly desire and overheated capitalism package tragedy as comedy, screams of despair as shouts of elation. This is the capitalist purgatory in which the technologies of heaven and hell come and go in real-time.

Een chaotisch geheel van vernietiging
Elke gamer die ooit een favoriet spel met een slimme hack heeft uitgekleed kan het je vertellen: hoe mooi een driedimensionale wereld ook is, verander je het perspectief, trek je aan de naden, dan verandert die opeens in een vervormd poppenhuis. Met die blik benadert de Koreaanse 3Dkunstenaar Jaehun Park (35) in zijn video-installatie Event Horizon de ruïnes die de mens achterlaat. In het Plein Theater in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, dat op dit moment open is als pop-up-shop en galerie, kun je plaatsnemen op vloerniveau, of opklimmen op een badmeesterstoel. Die laatste brengt je op ooghoogte met het enorme scherm. Terwijl de zaal dreunt met de imponerende soundscape, speelt zich een driedimensionale videosimulatie in vijf hoofdstukken voor ons a f. Park digitaliseerde de ravage van vernietigde Syrische en Palestijnse dorpen naar een driedimensionaal model. Tijdens de simulatie zoomt hij uit, trekt hij de gebouwen uit elkaar en laat ze uiteen spatten als ronde kogels in het luchtledige. Dan weer laat hij de puinhopen samenkomen tot een eigen universum.

"Rather than applying general critiques of reality, Park creates 3D animations that tackle expansive capitalism and rampant neoliberalist approaches to economies through rigorous research based on evidence and reference materials. The absurd relationship between religion and capital is a well-known topic, but Park takes this old problem and reinvents it by pooling specific evidence, precise measurements and digital technologies to re-ask questions about what life means.”

Park gebruikt in zijn praktijk 3D-computer gegenereerde beelden en simulaties met als overkoepelend thema geopolitiek en de vernietigende menselijke impact op de wereld. Eerder schreef ik al over werken te zien eerder dit jaar in het Plein Theater die gingen over kapitalisme. Hier bij Bradwolff zien we poëtische gestileerde conceptuele video beelden over klimaat, de natuur en de polarisatie en conflicten tussen oost en west. Als kijker van kunst draagt mijn ervaring met het werk bij aan de betekenis van een werk. Het ontbreken van mensen in de werken van Park maakt gaat vooral ook over de “afstand” van de individuele mens tot natuur, tot geopolitiek. Voel ik me onderdeel van het probleem? Voel ik verantwoording, wat is mijn rol en draagt die positief of negatief bij? “Zie” ik, en spoort het me aan tot actie of “Kijk” ik, alsof het mij niet aangaat?

Wanneer een steen mystieke waarde heeft in de fysieke wereld, is het de vraag hoe deze zijn waarde blijft houden wanneer het verandert naar een digitaal object. Het werk van Jaehun Park reflecteert op noties van spiritualisme, religie en culturele representatie in de digitale wereld. Brandende windmolens, smeltende ijsblokken, wierookbranders, skeletbeelden etc. maken deel uit van zijn visuele repertoire. Hij onderzoekt niet alleen hoe deze rituele objecten een nieuwe betekenis krijgen, maar ook hoe ze een nieuwe materialiteit krijgen in een virtuele omgeving. Hij gaat heen en weer tussen fysiek en virtueel totdat grenzen beginnen te vervagen. Jaehuns werk heeft in beide velden een enorme tactiele kwaliteit. Een gedigitaliseerde steen, voorgesteld door een complexe puntenwolk, wordt een fluwelen print, een led-scherm een tl-buis – of is het andersom? Elk werk wordt tot in detail geconstrueerd en beheerst. Materialiteit is het uitgangspunt van zijn reflectie - ook al zijn deze manifestaties van digitaal meesterschap niet altijd door Jaehun zelf gemaakt, aangezien hij vaak werkt met gevonden 3D-objecten en simulaties. Jaehun nodigt de bezoeker uit via het visuele in zijn universum. Daarna is het zaak om deze verleidelijke en vervreemdende voorwerpen niet te consumeren, maar ze tot je te laten spreken, naar hun verhalen te luisteren. Het werk van Jaehun kan worden gezien als een virtueel theater van tekens, een podium of omgeving waarin gedigitaliseerde en geboren digitale culturele artefacten de hoofdrolspelers zijn - die vaak een zware religieuze, politieke of culturele geschiedenis met zich meedragen. Het podium voor deze objecten is een 3D-simulatie weergegeven in een videogame-machine. Als bezoeker moet je door het mooie maar afstandelijke digitale oppervlak dringen om tot de kern te komen. In het werk van Jaehun opent het digitale wegen voor een meer kritische reflectie op vaak zware en soms zelfs gewelddadige geopolitieke en culturele geschiedenissen. Hij schuwt het niet om grote maatschappelijke vraagstukken en hun functionerende structuren zoals kapitalisme, klimaatverandering en religie aan te snijden en daarmee na te denken over hoe mensen de aarde beïnvloeden.
