Research and study play a vital role for Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky. Since summer 2017 Kovacovsky co-organizes the monthly reading club ‘Between Us and Nature – A Reading Club’ together with Sina Ribak. They read texts related to natural sciences, art, anthropology, postcolonialism, and (post)anthropocene, chosen from a female perspective looking beyond disciplines. The books the artist studies show the way in which humans depict and comprehend nature. They make visible that the philosophy and science of any given time always heavily affects how we understand nature.
As modern humans we live in a paradox: man is part of nature and nature is being pulled into man’s “artificial” world. In her work Kovacovsky explores these subjects by forming intimate relationships with plants and objects that she finds in the wild. Her process is intuitive: She combines, observes and experiments with natural patterns, compositions and order. She zooms into small aspects of plants such as holes in leaves, created by caterpillars, the formal appearance of branches or the reproduction strategies of plants. She plays with movement, arrangement and rhythm of objects within her work. In 2010, she got acquainted with the technique of nature printing during research at the New York Botanical Garden library. This direct method of reproduction had a tremendous influence on her work. It led her to work with plant specimens, utilizing photocopies (339 Gräser 2010), frottages (Die Grasbüschel 2011) and cyanotypes (Jackotype, 2017 and Sequoia Type 2017), and to experiment in the color lab with photograms, multiple exposures on photo-paper and most recently with casts in plaster. In exploring these techniques, she is influenced by the artist / biologist Anna Atkins who made the first photo book in 1843 creating photograms of seaweed on cyanotype paper.
Coming from a background in photography, Kovacovsky works on the peripheries of the photographic medium and experiments with ways in which photographs stay unique. In nature, where two plants of the same species are never identical, the unique is a fundamental notion. The artist is fascinated by the characteristics of beings that only exist once.
Photography is sort of the antithesis of nature, as it is part of the problem when thinking about the environment. It is a harsh manmade medium that has a strong historic context coming out of industrialization. But photography also forms beautiful parallels with plants, since they are both “children of light”. For her it captures the dualism of nature and culture.

DIe Natur in den Kopierer legen
Die Natur kopieren wollten und wollen viele Künstlerinnen und Künstler. Doch nur wenige gehen dabei so unverfroren direkt vor wie Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky-und benutzen einfach einen Tintenstrahldrucker. Doch so simpel ihr Mittel, so vielfältig sind ihre künstlerischen Produkte. lm Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau und im Kunsthaus Langenthal lässt sich momentan nachvollziehen, was für sie «Kunst nach der Natur» heisst.

Ihr Berliner Atelier transformierte sie zum Labor, in welchem sie die Textilien mit einer Lösung aus Ammoniumeisen(lll)-citrat und Kaliumhexacyanoferrat präparierte, bevor sie diese für die ca. zwanzigminütigen Belichtungen je nach Wetterlage und UV-Gehalt im Aussenraum auslegte. Anschliessend wurden die Spezialvorhänge nach Thun transportiert und vor den gläsernen Wänden des erwähnten Erweiterungsbaus befest igt. Hier verweisen sie nun auf die ältesten Pftanzenarchivierungs verfahren in Cyanblau und erweisen der menschheitsü berdauernden, klimaausbalancierenden Rarität des Mammutbaums Reverenz, von dem es in Thun noch weitere zehn Exemplare gibt.

New series of photograms
lt is not surprising that Swiss photographer Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky cites Anna Atkins's nineteenth-century cyanotypes, Karl Blossfeldt's 1930s studies of plants,and Max Ernst's Histoire naturelle(Natural history, 1926) as points of inspiration. Kovacovsky's new series of photograms continues the artist's ongoing investigations into nature, beginning here with perforated leaves selected for their "found compositions" the result of ha ving been chewed by caterpillars. The leaves are then used as "negatives," and color is added or subtracted with the aid of filters. The resulting images, born out of darkroom chance and experimentation, are abstractions reminiscent of bright pigment on paper, camouflage, and at times a vibrant Rorschach test. This project follows Kovacovsky's earlier studies of single blades of grass that carne from a period of research in the library of the New York Botanica! Gardens on the arrangement and reproduction of plant specimens. Here, however, the rigor of taxonomy, or transparent study of organic forms, is sacrificed in favor of an elemental darkroom alchemy that transforms the original found compositions into disorienting, beautiful, and at times psychedelic impressions that have their origins in a real world now far removed.

Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky laat n haar video ‘Sand Drawings’ zien waarin plantensprieten bewegend op de wind figuren in het zand maken die er als geometrische tekeningen uitzien. Soms kruipt een insect door het beeld die ook een spoor in het zand achterlaat en zoiets toevoegt aan de tekening van de wind die het sprietje als een graveerstift in een onvoorspelbaar ritme over de grond laat bewegen.
