TORCH is 40 years old! We are organising an anniversary exhibition to thank everyone who has been involved, from artists to visitors and friends. We are grateful for the many fond memories and confident that a bright future is ahead of us. Let's have a toast to 40 years of taking chances, breaking new ground and having fun.
Ever since the legendary Adriaan van der Have founded the gallery in 1984, it has been a beacon: follow the bright light and you will be illuminated. From the beginning, it was one of the defining destinations for photography and contemporary art in the country. The torch was passed to his son Mo 15 years ago, and to this day he continues to be committed to his artists and audience, creating exciting presentations that refuse to follow conventions.
We are celebrating the gallery's past, present and future by bringing together no less than 40 artists we have worked with or currently work with. We asked each of them to provide one artwork that is 40 centimetres high. The resulting presentation is a mix of pieces that have TORCH as their theme, other new artworks that were created for this event, and works from the archives that represent the gallery's glorious past. Together, they illustrate the defining traits of TORCH and its artists: innovative, boundless, touching, honest – and not afraid of a little controversy.
Included are nationally and internationally acclaimed artists that took some of their first steps together with the gallery, such as Susan Anderson and the late Teun Hocks. Also participating is a large number of artists who have been loyal to the gallery for years, including Popel Coumou, Philip Akkerman and TINKEBELL. The future is represented by playful works addressing the theme of TORCH by young artists like Krijn Kroes and Mees van Rijckevorsel.
Come for the booze, stay for the art!
