Like the work of his digital native peers, Constant Dullaart’s often conceptual work manifests itself both online and off. Within his practice, he reflects on the broad cultural and social effects of communication and image processing technologies while critically engaging the power structures of mega corporations that dramatically influence our worldview through the internet. He examines the boundaries of manipulating Google, Facebook and Instagram and recently started his own tech company Dulltech™ with Kickstarter.

Constant Dullaart (NL, 1979) is a former resident of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and lives and works in Berlin. His works were shown in MCA Chicago, Whitechapel Gallery London, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Import Projects Berlin, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, ZKM Karlsruhe, Victoria & Albert Museum London, and MAAT Lisbon. Dullaart has curated several exhibitions and lectured at universities and academies throughout Europe, most recently at Werkplaats Typografie, a post-graduate programme at ArtEZ, Arnhem. In 2015, he was awarded the Prix Net-Art, the international prize for internet art. His most recent solo exhibition at Upstream Gallery is Deep Epoch (2016).

Opening season '23: 4 x people and technology

Amsterdam galleries are opening their doors today for the new season. What can we expect from the more than 45 participating galleries? A popular theme appears to be technology, especially our relationship to it. And it turns out that this is a broad theme that raises quite diverse questions. For example, Meiro Koizumi questions our blind faith in technological progress, while Terry Rodgers focuses on the emotionally numbing effect of all these discoveries. Constant Dullaart shows us the possibilities, but also the shortcomings of AI, and recent graduate Julia Leyten confronts us with our excessive social media use.

Behind the screens – 50 years of computer art at CODA museum

Behind the screens brings to mind nature and the meaning of visual art today. With the development and growth of digital art forms, many of the laws and customs of the art market appear to be outdated. After all, the original of a digital artwork consists of a succession of ones and zeros, but is rarely presented in that form. Moreover, traditional crafts are increasingly being combined with digital techniques. Such hybrid art forms – from plotter drawings, tapestries and websites to videos, software and murals – are all part of the Behind the screens exhibition curated by Els Drummen (1980) and Martijn Dijkstra.

Looking for a hip workplace in Amsterdam next month? Why not at Upstream Gallery? The chairs are ergonomically sound, the computers fast, the coffee maker lets the caffeine flow non-stop and there are even yoga mats. A contemporary office garden with a chain-worthy name: dull.life. The coworking space is a creation by artist Constant Dullaart. Since the beginning of this century, he has consistently appropriated the language, resources and strategies of major tech companies. Of course dull.life is parody, but it is also a form of guerrilla war. Dullaart infiltrates and sabotages. He frees up the creativity that has been muzzled in the technological era and trained to be financially driven and innovative. And he turns everything upside down. [...] His great strength is that he makes invisible machinations behind the equally invisible technology tangible and physical. In a funny way too. Like in the video in which he - with colorful stickers in his hand - imitates the screensaver of DVD players in a silly analogue way. Many works in this unofficial retrospective have a name that starts with "dull". A game with the artist's last name, which in English-speaking countries soon became 'dull art'. Very fitting, because this oeuvre is about the averages with which algorithms and big data guide and shape our world. But the subversive twist that Dullaart gives it is anything but boring.
