Kristof De Clercq gallery
De Amerikaanse kunstenaar Jeff McMillan (°1968) studeerde beeldende kunst in Texas en Alabama voordat hij in 1998 naar Londen verhuisde. Zijn werk benadert schilderkunst via materialiteit en proces, vaak in dialoog met gevonden voorwerpen.
Zijn recente reeks schilderijen is het resultaat van het aanbrengen van dunne sluiers olieverf op gespannen antiek linnen. Vervolgens bevestigt hij de doeken gedurende enkele jaren aan de buitenkant van zijn studio. Deze geleidelijk veranderende buiteninstallatie van tientallen werken is als een kruising tussen een muur uit Mondriaans atelier in New York en het huis van een autodidactische kunstenaar uit de ‘Deep South’. De schilderijen op de gevel worden blootgesteld aan zon, regen en vervuiling, en evolueren en verkleuren zo in de loop van de tijd tot McMillan ze terugbrengt naar het atelier om de afgewerkte werken te creëren. Elk werk behandelt een eenvoudig schilderkunstig concept - sommige zijn eenvoudig opgespeld of ingelijst, andere zijn gevouwen tot sculpturen en zelfs architectonisch. Ze hebben allemaal een gedeelde geschiedenis en zijn op zichzelf ook historische schilderijen, met de sporen van hun eigen tijd en plaats.
