Pere Llobera (b. 1970, Barcelona) is a versatile artist who blends classical painting techniques with contemporary surrealist influences. His work occupies the intersection of tradition and innovation, creating a layered dialogue between history, mythology, personal experiences, and societal realities. Llobera’s paintings evoke images that are both familiar and indescribable, taking the viewer on a visual and emotional journey through memory and imagination.
Llobera not only explores the physical limitations of painting but also the liberating power that the medium holds. He poses fundamental questions about the human condition, the unconscious, and the impact of history on the identity of the individual. His work is rich in symbolism, ranging from personal memories to broader political and social issues, making it both introspective and socially relevant.
Through bold colour choices and innovative compositions, Llobera investigates the tension between the traditional and the contemporary. His earlier works were characterised by restrained colour palettes, but more recently he has begun experimenting with vibrant, pop-art-inspired hues. Pere Llobera
Pere Llobera’s current exhibition extends his distinctive conceptual position on the possibilities of painting. Yet a sense of melancholia arises from two paintings installed near each other at the far end of the gallery, works that set the tone for the show. Both Foc Nere (Black Fire) and Abandoned Model (all works 2013) have been painted from models, a strategy Llobera had not previously explored and one that plays a crucial role in the exhibition. While Foc Nere evokes an fire where black flames exude neither light nor color, Abandoned Model features an arrangement of white pieces of cardboard that must have once shaped an object that now looks overtly devastated. Significantly, Abandoned Model evokes the renowned Sea of Ice in which Caspar David Friedrich represented a shipwreck in a frozen sea.

From Antic Assemblages to Cartoonish Canvases, Pere Llobera’s Stylistic Gambles
Pere Llobera has exhibited his paintings since the 1990s and has taken increasingly perverse pleasure in stylistic switchbacks and self-sabotage. An allegiance to magical-realist-inclined painting, underpinned by his skilful drawing, has long since dilapidated into offbeat objects, prolific zine making and performance. But the thrust of ‘Action’, Llobera’s first solo at Barcelona’s Bombon Projects, is carried by six works in oil on linen. Comprising more than 30 works, ‘Kill Your Darlings’ at Sis Galeria – an exhibition space above an artisan framing shop in nearby Sabadell – is essentially a drawing show, with a title that paraphrases advice attributed to novelist William Faulkner to be unpitying in eradicating one’s own stylistic crushes.

Sometimes, the work of two artists can differ drastically yet still be related. This wonder happens at Fons Welters gallery, where in the back space, work by the Catalan Pere Llobera (1970) is on display, and in the front space, an installation by the Dutch Zoro Feigl (1983) is featured.
‘Tired of being strong’ is the title under which Pere Llobera (1970) has brought together his paintings. These are half-realistic, half-surreal works in which Llobera explores the fraying edges between crazy and normal, and subtly mocks the dos and don’ts of the art world. Having an exhibition in Berlin, the hippest city in Europe, is fantastic for your CV. But what if no one notices the exhibition, and you return to your studio in Barcelona with a heavy heart? Llobera painted a man swimming through a sea of wood in flickering dark brown.
On a smaller canvas, you see a man hanging from a doorknob. His feet are drawn up, as if the floor beneath him is burning hot. To his left, two pink balloons dance. It’s a loosely painted parable about strength and weakness, about when to let go and then, yes, then you fall, then maybe the balloon pops.
That same quality is present in the huge installation of old fire hoses built by Zoro Feigl. Feigl has made a name for himself on a modest scale with machine-driven works, choreographic explorations in space using car tires, cables, hoses, and metal pieces.
This installation also has that choreographic quality. Every hour, a compressor fills the fire hoses with air under great noise. The hoses, attached to cables on the ceiling, crawl, press, push, until the air escapes with a soft hiss. What was strong becomes weak, where the tension had built up, limpness arises.
