Stallaerts' art combines personal memories and a nightmarish perception of the world. Family experiences often serve as direct models for the paintings and photographs. His work has been described as captivating, mysterious, intriguing, accessible and layered. Stallaert's family is often directly involved in the creation processes, for example his mother, photographer Anni Albrecht, in the creation of the photo series ‘Es spuckt’ (It spits), which deals with ancient rituals in Albrecht's Bavarian native village.
