Lawrence James Bailey verzamelt materiaal uit de natuur, fotografeert deze en voegt de beelden samen tot een nieuwe voorstelling. Deze voorstellingen fungeren als de inspiratie en de voorstudie voor zijn uiteindelijke textiele werken. In het type landschap waar hij uit put, is de mens nadrukkelijk aanwezig: ‘Het grensgebied waar de stad en het omringende landschap elkaar ontmoeten. Een soort niemandsland, waar nauwelijks iemand komt en waar criminele activiteiten plaatsvinden.’ In een wereld waarin de meeste natuur door de mens wordt gecontroleerd, ziet hij deze terreinen als de nieuwe wildernis. ‘Je wordt daar niet opgegeten door een wolf, maar het kan er wel gevaarlijk zijn en op confrontaties uitlopen.’
De bierblikjes, gestolen handtassen, condoomverpakkingen en sigarettenpeuken die hij in dit niemandsland tegenkomt, staan haaks op romantische ideeën over het landschap en idyllische natuur. In zijn textiele werken brengt hij ze samen tot een nieuw geheel, dat zowel in de opbouw als in referenties gelaagd is. ‘Een organische mix van realiteiten.’ Waar hij eerder tekende met draad en naaimachine hergebruikt Lawrence nu veelal textiel en borduurwerk, gevonden in de kringloopwinkel of op Marktplaats. Een werkwijze die aansluit bij de manier waarop hij zijn bronmateriaal verzamelt. In zijn banieren, vlaggen en wandkleden krijgen de door hem samengestelde landschappen, voorzien van poëtische of prikkelende teksten, een eigen geschiedenis. Hun verhaal ontvouwt zich naarmate je langer kijkt.

Lawrence James Bailey, geboren in 1976 in Stoke-on-Trent, VK, werkt en woont momenteel in Amsterdam. Lawrence studeerde in 1998 af met een BFA aan de Hull School of Art. Daarna werd hij aangenomen voor een tweejarige residentie bij De Ateliers in Amsterdam, die hij in 2001 succesvol afrondde.
Lawrence exposeert sinds 1995 in solo- en groepstentoonstellingen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Nederland, Spanje en Letland. Bijvoorbeeld de 'Rijswijk Textiel Biennale' in Museum Rijswijk in 2019, 'Brownsfield Research Centre' bij AirSpace Gallery in Stoke -on-Trent in 2018 en 'Survival Kit 6 / Utopian City in the Latvian Center for Contemporary Art, Riga in 2014. Lawrence en Galerie Bart werken sinds 2017 samen, resulterend in solo-, duo- en groepstentoonstellingen en beursdeelnames, zoals Drawing Room Madrid en Big Art.
In 2020 was Lawrence artist in residence bij AIR Guiniguada op Gran Canaria. In 2016 won hij de fotowedstrijd Wonderlust van De Hallen in Haarlem en in 2002 ontving hij een stipendium van het Fonds BKVB. Zijn werk is te vinden in de collecties van het Amsterdam Museum, Europol, Huize Frankendael, het Amsterdam Grafisch Atelier, CBK Amsterdam, Deiska, Hotel WOW, De Ateliers en vele privé collecties. Daarnaast is Lawrence betrokken geweest bij de totstandkoming van meerdere tijdschriften en theaterproducties.
