Dieuwke Spaans (1973) started her career as a pur sang artist. In fact, she won the Koninklijke Subsidie voor de Schilderkunst two years in a row ('97 and '98). Nevertheless, around 2004 she made a remarkable choice: after two years at the Rijksacademie, Spaans switched from drawing to making collages. Since then, Dieuwke Spaans has been working exclusively with existing images and has cut out countless figures. She scours book markets and thrift shops in search of useful images. According to Spaans, her own handwriting got in her way more and more. She told the Dutch daily de Volkskrant: "When you draw, you reduce the three-dimensional to a two-dimensional surface. In order to do so, you have to leave things out and add things. I wanted to get rid of that. Now I make collages. When I work with photos, I work with reality. I don't manipulate it. The latter is only in the way I choose to present reality." For example, for her series Entanglements (2011), Spaans cut, reshaped and painted over photographs from the First and Second World War. Impressive images in sombre colours surrounded by a wreath of brightly coloured birds and flowers. Because Spaans does not impose morality on the viewer, it produced alienating works that entangle the viewer in the possible interrelationships, historical references, metaphors and symbols. In her recent series Sun-kissed Silence (2018), Dieuwke Spaans draws her inspiration from the films of Tarkovsky and Lynch, and the work of Fontana and René Daniels, in which the idea of a parallel world is central. In works with titles such as Portal 6 and Axis Mundi, Dieuwke Spaans confronts us with the subjectivity of our gaze and the limited knowledge we have of reality. Spanish also ventures into ceramics for the first time.
