About

Playfulness
When you look at a painting or drawing by Wieteke Heldens, you immediately notice something: playfulness. Although she always submits to laws and rules, she ends up with a cheerful result. In her "Legends" she paints stories about material. It is all the material that she has in her studio at a specific moment. She arranges, numbers and applies everything as randomly as possible. The colors dance on the canvas and the cheerfulness splashes off. Perhaps it is also due to the stubbornness and the slight hint of craziness that we taste. Obsession and regularity can lead to very nice things with Wieteke Heldens. We see dots of paint, plasters, fluorescent orange stickers and stripes of black marker. They are the main characters in her life. Everywhere she goes, they are close by. As the "owner" of her work, you cannot help but start thinking about your own possessions when you look at put the order that she keeps applying to herself. What is your story? How would you organize? Photo by Tammy van Neerum
