LEVI VAN VELUW (NL, 1985) produces multi-disciplinary works that include photography, video, sculpture, installation and drawing. His layered pieces of sublime design, modernist architecture and disruptive environments possess a strange, unreal beauty with no perception of time, space and reality. Many of his works feature a combination of grids and geometric forms, which explore the idea of a deep immeasurable space.

Koen Kleijn (De Groene Amsterdammer) on The Relativity of Matter
What there is to say, is that this reveals a very impressive level of artistry, that The Relativity of Matter is among the best there is to see this year in the Netherlands, and that I was stunned by its sheer vigour. Van Veluw is now considering, so he says, an even larger version, possibly with dancers or actors. I say, give him the Dutch Pavilion at the next Venice Biennale, if only to make us forget all that shoddy work of this year, and then give him carte blanche at the Dutch Opera.

Sandra Smets (H-Art Magazine) on The Relativity of Matter
Even if it cannot be otherworldly, with the desk and the cupboards and all, this is a very different universe, far removed from any reality, time or space. It feels as if people never come here or have never been here – were it not that you yourself, as a person, are standing right there. And that is just the first room of this extraordinary exhibition.

Rutger Pontzen (De Volkskrant) on The Relativity of Matter
Once inside, the surprise is overwhelming. Van Veluw has remodelled the whole interior to his linking by turning it into a labyrinth of darkened hallways and dark rooms; packed with shelving displaying a rich assortment of geometric objects. It is as if you were entering the home of a mysterious, quixotic mathematician. Yes, inevitably you think of the lavish museum of Sir John in London. Or the home of cult figure Des Esseintes in À Rebours, minutely described by Joris-Karl Huysmans. The hedonist who turned away from the world and furnished his hermitage with Moroccan tapestries, exotic furniture, kitschy artefacts and a library of first editions from the 4th and 5th centuries. A completely artificial environment, conceived and constructed to the millimetre, replete with a turtle whose shell is inlaid with gold and precious stones. Who would not want to wander through such an imaginary environment?

Metropolis M on The Relativity of Matter
The Relativity of Matter is a unique, impressive installation with which van Veluw has completely engulfed Marres. The old brewery house is hidden behind many black dark corridors and rooms. The hallways are a meter wide and twice as high. The scant light makes it difficult to orientate oneself; every step must be carefully taken. Running into something is almost inevitable. In the first room there is shelving against every wall, from the baseboard to the ceiling, filled with hundreds of pieces of coal made of polyurethane. Somewhere in the icy silence an air supply system can be heard, so quietly that it can be confused with the echo of your own bloodstream. An alienating force emanates from the room; the rhythm of all those bits of coal arranged on the shelves makes for an amazing image.
