Galerie Fons Welters

Dressing, ceramics, tiles, tents, drawings: a variety of work forms and materials come together in the oeuvre of Jennifer Tee (Arnhem, 1973). Her work is exotic and contains ingredients from various cultures. There often is a combination with performance - there is dancing on the rugs or with the help of ceramic vases sound produced - so the work, as Tee calls it, is activated. It is as if she is developing her own rituals that are reflected in her installations. An important theme in her oeuvre is that of the 'intermediate state'. Or, as Tee calls it, 'the soul in limbo'. It is a metaphor for a place that is located on the border of the here, the reality of which we are part, and that which is possible. Experience and inspiration are the core of her work process and moreover symbolize what Tee wants to accomplish with her work: a meeting of reason, body and soul. For Tee, traditional production processes are essential - so she travels to China to master the age-old ceramics technique. Traveling and thus being in a different place is also a significant aspect of Tees work It represents the process in which things and cultures overlap. This results in Tee regularly collaborating with artists, graphic designers and architects.

Hollandse meesters - Jennifer Tee. Director: Lisa Boerstra; production: Interakt.
Jennifer Tee works across sculpture, installation, performance and collage in an ongoing negotiation between esoteric ideas and the materiality of objects. Often working with charged cultural artefacts and symbols, Tee pairs diverse points of inspiration to instigate dialogues between Eastern philosophies and Western culture.

About

conservator Boijmans van Beuningen
"For years Jennifer Tee has shown herself to be a unique multi-talent that, with seemingly equal ease, plunges into a profound choreography as an extensive hanging sculpture. What is remarkable is that no matter how coherent and layered her work is, it remains accessible to a wide audience. "

Rijksmuseum exhibition Jennifer Tee
Because of the spiritual atmosphere of the exhibition, you could quickly compare this with the art-historical cliché of the museum as a 'temple for the arts'. The idea that a museum functions as a special space where different rules apply than in the rest of society, a place where the viewer can observe the sacred objects (the works of art) in respectful silence. But what Jennifer Tee does is different. A museum as a temple is passive while Let It Come Down is anything but that. It is precisely the relationship with the outside world. This is reinforced by the five performances that are planned during the exhibition. These performances are performed by the dancers Miri Lee and Christian Guerematch and have developed Jennifer Tee to 'activate' the space. That is to say, these performances must break through the 'objective' atmosphere of the gallery and thus make room for more personal associations at work. Jennifer Tee turns the exhibition into a ritual where her own works are the objects, the gallery is the stage and the visitor becomes the participant. Or even better: he or she becomes part of it.
