Stefaan van Biesen is a Belgian (Beveren, °53) multidisciplinary artist based in Beveren, Belgium.
In Stefaan van Biesen's work, there is an association between thinking, acting and well-being: 'How do our thoughts manifest themselves through actions in our environment and to what extent do they contribute to our well-being?' An important part of his artistic and international activities is spent by Van Biesen on exchanges and collaborations with artists and scientists from different disciplines. In doing so, he aims to actualise the nomadic aspect of Renaissance artists. Travelling seen as a laboratory of thought: drawings, notes and other artefacts born from encounters with others. In his work, Stefaan van Biesen refers to the concept of "the body as unitary measure": the use of the senses and the body as an instrument of knowledge, experience, creativity.
Since 1990, Stefaan Van Biesen has been building an extensive international oeuvre of drawings, designs, installations, photography, video, soundscapes and performances that he aptly calls 'urban rituals'. Apart from numerous solo exhibitions in Belgium, van Biesen's work has been on display all over Europe as well as USA, Brazil and China.
In 2019, van Biesen participated in the Venice Biennale with 'Art Science Exhibits' (Berlin), while in the same year he realised an artistic research at the request of his municipality Beveren around the historical figures Joos Vijd and Van Eyck. Stefaan van Biesen is a member and co-founder of the international platform the Milena Principle (2000), an international independent art platform distinguished by unconventional modes of art and their influential debates.
