Marijn van Kreij’s exhibitions are comprehensive installations in which each individual work contributes to a web of references. The creative act itself serves as a primary theme within Van Kreij’s practice. The artist exploits the manual nature of his work while questioning notions of authenticity and originality. Van Kreij avoids virtuosity, works relatively quickly, on impulse, and allows mistakes to be present.
In his installations the artist tries to enforce an intense, associative way of looking. His work is about these associations and 'copies'. He combines a personal spirit with an analytical and investigative approach. His recent work consist of large paintings on paper using details from Picasso works among others. Not copying the details as closely as possible but using the details as a point of departure.

ABN AMRO Kunstprijs 2016 juryrapport
With its decision to grant the ABN AMRO Art Award to Marijn van Kreij, the jury has chosen an investigative artist who has his own very distinct visual language. In Van Kreij’s oeuvre, consisting of drawings, paintings, collages, videos and installations, the process of duplication plays a key role. The jury values the artist’s contemporary stance demonstrated in the way he raises ‘non-subjects’ and ordinary details to the level of art, as well as in his manual approach to appropriating images amidst the current age of digital and online visual culture.
