Norman Dilworth (b. 1931, Wigan, UK – d. 2023, Lille, France) was a prominent figure in abstract art, celebrated for his geometric approach to sculpture. His work is characterized by systematic, constructivist, and concrete elements, often drawing on mathematical rules and principles that ground his pieces in geometry, repetition, and structured order. His sculptures explore how we perceive forms and structures.
Born in Wigan in 1931, Dilworth studied at the Slade School of Art at University College London, later continuing his studies in Paris. Early in his career, he created paintings and drawings in black and white, maintaining a strong geometric focus and a keen interest in human perception. Over the years, his work was acquired by major collections, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Tate in London, and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
Notable exhibitions include Pier + Ocean: Construction in the Art of the Seventies at the Hayward Gallery and the Kröller-Müller Museum, solo exhibitions at Amsterdam’s Swart Gallery and Art Affairs, and a retrospective at the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis. In 2005, he was given carte blanche at Musée des Beaux Arts, Calais followed by a retrospective at Musée Matisse, Le Cateau Cambrésis in 2007.
