Ruta Butkute art practice combines sculpture, choreography and installation. Guiding through ideas of performativity and function of the sculpture, She researched ‘how to make sculpture move’; an important question to ask since sculpture is static, and doesn’t move, unless one is given the key to be able to read it. She reassesses the origins and functions of materials and forms by investigating and emphasizing their possibilities regarding movement. Having a background in ceramics, She makes use of primal material aspects such as weight, scale, mass and gravity. During her Rijksakademie residency (2014-2015), she started to translate sculpture into different mediums. The movement they introduced in her practice started to change the sculpture itself. Over the course of the years she created a new medium in her art practice that she called ‘sculptural performance’, a new art tool where objects/sculptures and space direct the movement. She uses the primal efforts of movements such as
grounding, falling, jumping, rising, sinking, a process close to creating her ceramic sculptures and emphasizing their possibilities regarding movement.

Rijksakademie open studios/ November 2014
The title of the work, Pike: Straddle: Tuck, is in a sense a ready-made that outside its usual context of acrobatics acquires the quality of autonomous sound.
Sculptural/video installation installed in artificial light studio R1, the attributes from the space as tripods, screens integrated as a part of the installation.
Some of the sculptures are ceramic forms devoid of any use or reference. They have been combined with ready-mades that have been transformed and stripped of meaning through an adaptation as minimal as possible. In ‘sculptural videos’ showing repetitive, almost hypnotic actions the everyday object
comes alive as a performer.

De suggestie van een choreografie. Lichamelijkheid hoort bij beeldhouwkunst. Er is een fysieke spanning nodig om een sculptuur te maken. En het lijf van de kijker, dat om het werk heen beweegt en volumes aftast en inschat, bepaalt de ruimtelijkheid die een beeld anders maakt dan een schilderij of een tekening. Staand voor de minimalistische beelden van Butkute wordt je extra bewust van dat basisgegeven. []
Gekleurde Stroken
Nieuw is het tweedimensionale werk, dat de vraag oproept of Butkute's platte beelden misschien ook geen liggende schilderijen zijn. De kunstenaar bracht gekleurde stroken en vlakken over elkaar aan op tegels om ze vervolgens in de klei te bakken. Een beeldhouwer die schildert. En weet die patronen waar een dansje, hartslag of looproute in te lezen valt. Butkute weet een wig te drijven in de kier tussen plat vlak en ruimte en vindt dat in de suggestie van de beweging.

Japanse matten als bewegende Mondriaan in drie dimensies. Zwarte platen. Oersterke performers /dansers Roos van Berkel en Tashi Iwaoka brengen met schijnbaar moeiteloos gemak de geometrische zwarte platen in beweging. De echte tatami is makkelijk te tillen, hier zijn de vloerdelen van hout en loodzwaar. Biceps bollen, pezen trillen, de adem gaat zwaar – maar de bewegingen blijven uiterst gestileerd. In twintig minuten tijd ontstaan vlakken, muren, tent-achtige constructies en dozen. Alles in abstracto en met een uitstraling die aan diepe meditatie doet denken. Swinging Sleeve draait om balans, volume, concentratie, kracht, schoonheid en bezieling. Want het is door de lichamen van de dansers dat die zwarte vloerplaten worden opgeladen met energie en wij als kijker de sensatie krijgen van een bewegende Mondriaan in drie dimensies. 2017

Keramiek vermomd
Een terugkerend element in haar oeuvre zijn zeer dunne, cirkelvormige, keramische schijven met een gekleurd patroon, zoals Two Bowlines (under a strain) (2015) en Sequence of Actions (2019). Deze zijn gemaakt door vloeibaar porseleinslib met verschillende kleurpigmenten in een mal – een gipsen plaat met houten omranding – te gieten. Butkute weet dat het patroon circulair zal worden, maar heeft geen invloed op de exacte vormgeving. Ook berekent ze nooit het percentage van de verschillende pigmenten, maar gaat ze af op haar voorspelling en weet ze dus van tevoren niet hoe de precieze kleursamenstelling zal worden. “Ik vind het interessant om een soort toevallige schilderijen te maken. Als ik het materiaal niet controleer, vormt het zichzelf. Mijn methode bestaat uit spelen, experimenteren en mezelf verrassen.” Haar keramische werken komen op organischewijze tot stand door improvisatie en experiment; het eindresultaat laat zich niet volledig voorspellen en is pas zichtbaar wanneer een object uit de oven komt. Dit geldt overigens ook voor haar installaties als geheel: die blijven veranderlijk. De losse objecten geven de indruk verplaatst of toegevoegd te kunnen worden en lijken niet vast te zitten in een onbuigzame structuur, wat een speels effect met zich meebrengt. “Als je je vasthoudt aan één ingekaderd idee dat je wilt bereiken, maak je het onmogelijk nog veranderingen aan te brengen en blokkeer je de vooruitgang van het werk”, zegt Butkute.

Sculptural Performance
Butkute waardeert niet alleen fysieke zwaarte, maar ook overdrachtelijke. Swinging Sleeve is geïnspireerd op de eeuwenoude Japanse tatami vloermat, die volgens bepaalde patronen vermenigvuldigd kan worden om er oppervlakten van verschillende maten mee te kunnen bedekken. De basisvorm van tatami (te vertalen als ‘geplooid of opgestapeld’) heeft altijd dezelfde maatvoering. Butkute gebruikt de ‘plattegrond’ van tatami, inclusief het daarin vervatte vouwsysteem, maar heeft de maat aangepast. Bovendien wordt tatami gemaakt van rijststro of ander licht materiaal, terwijl Butkute er een houten zwaargewicht van maakt. ‘Het bevalt me dat tatami de performance meer gewicht geeft, ik gebruik graag traditionele vormen. Maar ik negeer hun oorspronkelijke functie en betekenis,’ aldus Butkute. In feite lijkt ze een omkering te bewerkstelligen. Zo flexibel als tatami in materieel en ontwerptechnisch opzicht is, zo streng zijn de traditionele regels over de toegestane rangschikking - terwijl Butkute er een lastig te hanteren gevaarte van maakt, waar ze vervolgens alle denkbare rangschikkingen van wil beproeven.

On Objects in Motion
While reading descriptions of your works I discovered that you are interested in „objects that are left in the streets“. If I understood it right, it was not so much about “status of the trash“ but rather about losing original context and function and a chance for new possibilities. For me this idea works as a beautiful link to your work in general: I see objects in your installations as some shatters of everyday life that fall together into one constellation. Can you tell me more about how these objects come together?
One of my strategies is to transform one material into another in order to avoid easy recognition. I am trying to get rid of primary function and to create a chance for new, mysterious existence to emerge. In my everyday life, I am searching for objects, I recognize them in spaces around me, but the final selection takes place in my studio. This is where I choreograph objects in space, explore relationships between objects and materials and try to create a feeling of motion between them – a situation when one material leads to another. It is an intuitive process that closely relates to dance. That’s why I started to work with performance – I tried to rediscover sculpture in contact with human body.
