Vernissage 9 September, 4pm with an introduction by Antoon Melissen, art historian
Armando. The patiently waiting paper
Drawings, 1954-2018
Few artists are as multifaceted as Armando was: writer, poet, journalist, musician, boxer, sculptor, painter and draughtsman. However well-known Armando is in many of these disciplines, he is barely known as the fierce and impassioned draughtsman he was.
Drawing undoubtedly is the most direct and primary form of the visual arts; the most introverted, too. That an artist such as Armando was an avid draughtsman is less widely known. He made many hundreds of drawings, a large number of which are part of the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum.
A small, but nevertheless exceptionally beautiful collection of drawings from his artistic legacy are still held by the Armando Stichting, the foundation that administers his artistic legacy with admirable care. From this collection, we were able to curate a one-time selection for this exhibition.
We have deliberately chosen the drawing, a discipline in Armando’s oeuvre that has been rather overlooked until now.
