In Sam Andrea (1991) and Aldo van den Broek (1985) Vriend van Bavink is presenting at Art Rotterdam two artists with parallel expressive backgrounds. History, punk, underground, sex, romance and architecture are subjects which both artists put to frequent use. Their fascination with the conflicted desire of man for safety and security, but also for freedom, and the destruction that ensues are central features of their work. Their work is autobiographical and raw, but also merciless and frequently focussed on the dark side of life. And their similarities directly expose their biggest difference. Where Andrea works with meticulous calculation towards a vibrant, realistic result, Aldo works without check or restraint, and by intuition, to produce a more romantic, abstract depiction of these subjects.
