Henk Stallinga's “Lumen Balance” installation is truly magical. I saw it for the first time in a gigantic installation in the middle of a hospital: the LUMC in Leiden. This mobile consists of slightly curved LED tubes that move gently through the room, rotating and balancing slowly. The artist wanted to use light as a means of drawing in space, using varying light temperatures - warm light and cold light - to make us aware of the influence of light. Aware of the ways in which light changes during the day, but also during the various seasons.

Roger Hiorns makes remarkable chemical foam installations that can be hung from the ceiling. Until recently, a beautiful installation from this series was on display in Museum Kranenburgh, in an exhibition about an extremely elusive element: air. The work, from the collection of Museum Voorlinden, showed a compressor that produces bath foam bubbles in an incredibly slow pace, which will then rise from the stainless steel spheres, while appearing to defy the laws of gravity — at least temporarily. No foam shape is the same, so you’ll always see a different work of art.

Zoro Feigl also challenges the laws of nature in exciting kinetic installations. The work “Abysses” consists of a round, metal container, with a diameter of about a meter, that is filled with dye and oil. A mechanical, centrifugal movement allows the liquids and colours to flow into each other in a hypnotising way. At the same time, the installation seems to invoke a kind of infinite black hole.

Artist slash inventor Theo Jansen became famous for his imaginative “Beach animals”. They have been exhibited worldwide, in museums in Japan, Australia, the US, China, Argentina and France and major publications such as The New York Times and The Guardian have written about his work. Jansen studied at the Technical University in Delft, but ended up choosing a career in the arts. He is fascinated by movements and walking techniques and managed to imitate these with the help of computers, evolution simulations and ingenious techniques (including air pressure in PET bottles). Although he sometimes experiments with other materials, he always comes back to his favourite material: the PVC electrical pipe.
