5 x Light Art
Light art is an art form in which light is considered to be the most important medium. The reverse can also be true: in some light artworks, the shadow that arises as a result of the application of light takes center stage. One of the first light artworks ever created was a sculpture by the Hungarian artist Laszlo Moholy-Nagy in the 1920s. The interesting thing about light art is that it can take such diverse forms: from a skilfully combined array of industrial fluorescent tubes (Dan Flavin) and confident, blinking texts (Jenny Holzer), to infinite-looking spaces full of light (James Turrell) and an artificial sun in the large turbine hall in Tate Modern (Olafur Eliasson). But also think of the work of Carlos Cruz-Diez, Ann Veronica Janssens, DRIFT, Robert Irwin, Chryssa, Carsten Nicolai and François Morellet. Light art also happens to be a very popular art form. That may explain why the Netherlands celebrates no fewer than two light art festivals: GLOW and Amsterdam Light Festival. In this collection, five light artworks are highlighted.

Zalán Szakács
The Romanian artist Zalán Szakács is known for the extensive preliminary work that precedes his conceptual digital artworks. For instance, he researched media theories and the reflection of 17th-century lenses, but he also collected data about smells, sounds, materials and light in the Carpathians — a mountainous area in Transylvania, where the artist grew up. Light, space and sound are central to his interactive and immersive works of art, which effectively play with the human perception. The work “Eigengrau” (which translates as 'dark light') offers an escape from our daily lives and the excess of information that we absorb online. As a spectator, you experience five mental states in a period of 12 minutes: Deep State, Anticipation State, Weird State, Higher State and Relaxation State. Szakács studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven and obtained a master's degree at the Piet Zwart Institute.

Joncquil
Of course, a collection about light art should definitely include a neon text piece. The work of the Dutch artist Joncquil is extremely versatile: he makes paintings, drawings, photographs, films, sculptures and installations. But there is an overarching theme in his work: the passage of time. Here, the artist's neon installation rests on Martin Visser's iconic slatted bench, that Visser designed at the request of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Tip: Joncquil's work is currently on display in the latest collection presentation in Museum Voorlinden.

Jan van Munster
The best-known Dutch light artist is perhaps Jan van Munster, who had a major solo exhibition in the Kröller-Müller Museum a while ago. A significant common denominator in his work is his fascination for energy. Sometimes quite literally, in the works in which he freezes steel tubes or the works for which he shows batteries or magnets. Other times, it’s visible in a more figurative sense, for instance in the neon visualisations of abstract-looking vibrating lines of an EEG scan of his brain.

In her almost scientific practice, Greet Billet examines the relationship between the analog and digital ways in which colours are shown. She also looks at human perception of colours and observes that perceiving colour is not as objective as is often thought - which immediately makes colour a much more elusive and immaterial phenomenon. Billet tries to bring images back to their most elementary form and arrived at the binary code, after which she transfers the images to another medium. She is fascinated by the transition of colours: from analog to digital (and vice versa).

Henk Stallinga's “Lumen Balance” mobile consists of slightly curved LED tubes that move gently through the room, rotating and balancing slowly. The artist wanted to use light as a means of drawing in space, using varying light temperatures - warm light and cold light - to make us aware of the influence of light. Aware of the ways in which light changes during the day, but also during the various seasons.
