With In Motion #1 (2025), Ruta Butkute presents a tile-like sculpture in which material and process take center stage. The flat clay surface was fired in a traditional Japanese anagama kiln. Fire and smoke have left their marks: subtle shifts in color, texture, and burn patterns turn the surface into a direct imprint of the firing process.
The simplicity of the square form emphasizes its material presence. The work is both object and surface, showing how Butkute anchors movement, energy, and time within clay.
