Composed Oceanscapes (2024) consists of a series of plexiglass sculptures as part of the Composing Oceans project. Each piece is a surreal ocean landscape that plays with tensions, light and gravity.
The works symbolize the complex relationship between our past and the future. Everyone sometimes has the urge to linger in the now, to freeze time for a moment. Where everything falls silent and a rough ocean becomes serene. The works arise from the urge to capture that moment of now, the surreal world of the visual artist. But what if you have reached that place you long for? Is it the ultimate escape or real or does it only exist in the imagination?
This work is a sequel to the work 'The Narrative of Sunlight' (2022); an investigation into escapism and the elements of the landscapes around us. With her earlier work, Holman created a contemporary form of escapism. With the Composed Oceanscape pieces she asks the question: What comes after escape behavior? What does the place we long for look like?
