Always Lawrence James Bailey (1976, UK) drew and embroidered landscapes of no man's land, the edges of nature. But for this exhibition, he has chosen a new direction. People, whom he previously only made suggestively knowable through what they left behind, are now explicitly the subject. Lawrence embroidered his textile artworks with a sewing machine, using the device like a tattoo needle, constantly moving rapidly back and forth to thicken lines and fill in areas of color. In preparation, he made several trips to the Amsterdam hinterland, where, in isolation, he felt a different Lawrence than his urban self. He translated this personal change into portraits of his friends and acquaintances. Therefore, he depicts them not as they look, but as personifications of religious or mythical figures, often behind some kind of mask. The individuals are thus transformed—or transform themselves. According to Lawrence, this transformation is the crux of being alone in nature. Are you still the same person in this different, ‘more natural’ environment?
