WJM KOK, Maxi-Color (Cubes), 1992
'Maxi-Color (Cubes)' hangs in the group exhibition 'Peers and Pairs II' through July 2024. In this exhibition the painting is paired with John Baldessari's 'Skateboard (black)' from 2010. See image 3.
What Wjm Kok is concerned with can best be described as making work that eschews the distinction that a unique work carries with it because it is the only one of its kind. To appropriate something for a painting that is already available is his standard method. For example, he used standard moving blankets, table tops from Ikea and industrial polystyrene plates to create a 'painting'.
Not having to make choices, not using uniqueness and not passing judgment are things that he finds attractive. This is how the 'Maxi-Color' series was created, for which he converted all the pages from a coloring book for children into 36 paintings; in three different sizes.
Some of the largest ones (300 x 200 cm) are in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. See image 2.
