Hugo Debaere sculpted several portraits of himself, but also of the Ghanaian subtenants at his studio in Ghent. In the mid-1980s there were many Ghanaian refugees in Western Europe. In this way he fell under the spell of the African myths of origin... But he was also fascinated by the struggle for independence of African countries from the colonial yoke and the Western influence. The portraits are all life-size. This is one of several portraits.
