The presentation of MPV Gallery at Art Rotterdam will draw focus to the collective experience of stillness imposed by the COVID-19 lockdown. For many people, the pandemic has brought on a period of rare quiet. A dramatic narrowing of our social and working lives has redirected our attention towards modest stimulations.
As the pace of regular life tentatively resumes, art can remind us to slow down and remain observant. Stillness and permanence are common qualities of painting and sculpture.
For the presentation at Art Rotterdam, curator Majke Hüsstege, selected the minimalistic work of Manolo Ballesteros, the figurative but at the same time stilled sculptures of Stief Desmet, and the After Nurture paintings by Gijs van Lith, staging a fresh interaction between these contrasting but complementary art forms.
The presentation will encourage the audience to slow down, hold them present to a moment, and contemplate the work.
