Steel Stillman staat bekend om het maken van blinde vlekken in zijn werken, of hij nu foto's, muurtekeningen of tekstwerken gebruikt. Hij toont contouren van afgeplatte interieurs, details van een snapshot waardoor ze een soort snapshot-snapshots worden. In alle gevallen ontbreekt er iets; een verhaal, een plaats en toch wordt er een situationele precisie gesuggereerd. Steel Stillman raakt aan een ambigue verbeelding en reconstructie van een geschiedenis die persoonlijk is. Decennia lang heeft hij in zijn snapshot-fotografie het gevoel gehad dat dit ook van toepassing is op zijn eigen verleden en heden; zijn foto's geven vaak een verre herinnering weer van wat er is gebeurd.
