Gerbrand Burger is based in Amsterdam. He grew up in Driebergen, The Netherlands, studied Political Science and Language and Culture of Latin America at Leiden University, fine arts at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and School of Visual Arts and Cooper Union in New York. From 2006-2008 he was a resident at artist institute De Ateliers in Amsterdam. Subsequently he did residencies in Japan, Turkey and the Netherlands, and he worked at Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium, ceramics residency EKWC and Pompgemaal Den Helder.
His work has been shown in solo presentations at C&H Gallery (Objects From the Outside, Amsterdam, 2016), Kunstvereniging Diepenheim (Unhide All, Diepenheim, 2019), Pitcairn Museum of Contemporary Art (Exhibition Continues Upstairs, Groningen, 2020) and Bellyditcham Project Space (From a River to the Room, 2021, Amsterdam), Galleria Sculptor (Studio Furniture, Helsinki, 2022) and in group presentations at Maison van Doesburg (Coup de Foudre, 2017, Paris), Big Art (2018, Amsterdam) Lustwarande (2024, Tilburg), Kunstverein (2024, Amsterdam) CODA Museum (2024, Apeldoorn) and Malva Museum (2025, Lahti). He worked as scenographer for various theatre productions, for Holland Festival and theatres in the Netherlands, Belgium and the United States. His short films have been show at numerous festivals worldwide. Gerbrand is the founding director of Thinking Forest Foundation and initiator and founding board member of Square 28 studio cooperative in Amsterdam.
“I am a sculptor living in a wooden house in Amsterdam that I designed and built myself, across the water from the city centre. I work in a studio coöperative that I built with some friends in the harbor area, with my woodworking equipment and a generous stockpile of seasoned, local wood at hand. I have always loved being in a wood workshop, and now I can be there everyday! I love the process of making, that’s where my visual thinking happens, with my brain extending into my fingers. I really enjoy touching and shaping natural materials and through the making I tell the many stories of trees, transience and our contradictory relation to the living world we are part of.
Wood and clay are the materials I shape to my ideas and I make them into sculptures and objects, often with traits of furniture, including picture frames and vitrines. Visual sources vary from the shape of a puddle in an Irish limestone landscape, a gasket found in an online shop, a cutoff piece from the studio floor. In my outdoor sculptures you’ll find rustic trestles and Donald Judd chair knock-offs rotting in the forest, combined with solid, wooden books and wooden panels in exuberant shapes. I’m using drawing to sketch a rough idea of a sculpture, after which I’m immediately picking up wood and hand tools to draw the work out into the physical world. I’m outsourcing parts of the making to automated cutting or shaping, to feel and see more sharply what working by hand means today.
With my initiative Thinking Forest Foundation I’m expanding my work into the forest, forging connections with other makers and thinkers, with trees and with all of the living world.”
