Wieteke Heldens studeerde in 2007 af aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende kunsten in Den Haag. Hierna volgde ze een tweejarige vervolgopleiding bij DNA, de postacademische ateliers van de Vrije Academie. In deze periode exposeerde ze onder andere in het Haags Gemeentemuseum, in Zwitserland, België en Parijs en was Artist in Residence in Chongqing, China. In 2009 ontving ze een startstipendium van het Fonds BKVB. Sinds 2010 woont en werkt Wieteke ook in New York waar ze in 2011 en 2012 als Artist in Residence verbleef bij de Fluxfactory en daar exposeerde. In 2013 ontving zij de Koninklijke prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst.

Over de kunstenaar
Playfulness
Wanneer je naar een schilderij of tekening van Wieteke Heldens kijkt, valt meteen iets op: de speelsheid. Alhoewel zij zich telkens onderwerpt aan wetten en regels, eindigt ze met een vrolijk resultaat. In haar ‘Legends’ schildert ze verhalen over materiaal. Het is al het materiaal dat zij op een specifiek moment in haar atelier heeft. Ze ordent, nummert en brengt alles zo willekeurig mogelijk aan. De kleuren dansen op het doek en de vrolijkheid spat eraf. Misschien komt het ook door het eigenwijze en het tikkeltje gekte wat we proeven. Obsessie en wetmatigheid kan tot hele leuke dingen leiden bij Wieteke Heldens.
We zien dotjes verf, pleisters, fluoriderende oranje stickers en strepen zwarte marker. Het zijn de hoofdrolspelers in haar leven. Overal waar ze gaat, zijn ze in de buurt. De ordening die ze zichzelf telkens weer oplegt zet je als “eigenaar” van haar werk stil bij wat je zelf in huis hebt. Wat is jouw verhaal? Hoe zou jij ordenen?
