Julie Calbert is an artist that lives and works in Brussels. If photography is at the center of her practice, she approaches it as an alchemist, with a diversity of treatments and alterations
which rarefy images until their disappearance. This abstract dimension of her work distinguishes itself from her practice of staging bodies : spectral silhouettes, furtive, often feminine
apparitions, resurgent gestures, hands spawning unseen faces. In this sense, Julie Calbert’s work is as much mental as incarnated. It summons unexpected narration by the use of contrast,
between the rough materiality of which her medium is a witness and the phenomenology of the spirits traversing it. To the images she conceives, Julie Calbert associates found objects
in the space of her installations. Her recent work tends towards an even more radical abstraction, at the very edges of photographic film, in a pictorially pared down movement,
almost a landscape. Parallel to her artistic practice, Julie Calbert accompanies and sets into images the work of many artists in the international musical scene.
