Until 25 November, PONTI in Antwerp is presenting a solo exhibition by the young Belgian artist Witold Vandenbroeck. Through his mysterious works, inspired by geological and human phenomena and experiences, he invites viewers to explore the profound connection between humanity and landscape.
Vandenbroeck's paintings oscillate between figuration and abstraction. In some pieces, tangible elements like a boat or a cup are recognizable, while others, such as "Pioneer Species" (2023) and "Origin" (2023), demand more from the viewer’s imagination. His canvases offer room for personal interpretation and emotional engagement, despite an absence of any evident human presence.
The dark, rich colours draw you into the canvas. None of the artworks seem to directly depict a recognizable scene or landscape; they are more akin to suggestions or interpretations of shapes, archetypal representations of volcanoes, veins, rocks, and ceramics. Collectively, they appear to weave a continuous yet fragmented narrative about the perpetual cycle of natural processes. Vandenbroeck not only captures tangible phenomena, like a smoldering volcano, but also seems to seize the more ethereal aspects of nature, such as wind and evaporation. These elements infuse the image with an added dynamism.
Vandenbroeck studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and also holds a master's degree in civil engineering and architecture. On the occasion of this solo exhibition, his first at the gallery, PONTI is publishing a namesake publication, "Vessels." This edition is limited to 500 copies, with the first 15 being a special edition: hand-numbered and accompanied by an original drawing by the artist. The book will be presented in the gallery on Sunday 12 November at 3 p.m. Purchases can be signed by the artist at that time.
