Aaron van Erp (Veghel, 1978) lives in Paraguay, where a German sense of reality (dating back to the 1940’s) lives parallel to a new sense of self and an upcoming South-American awareness. Documenting memory, visualizing thoughts, is Van Erp’s permanent quest. In his solo exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in 2008 he was still depicting mental institutions where people dressed up as Napoleon were easily identified as delusional. Now, ten years later, in a society with fake news and alternative truths these lines have blurred. This might explain Van Erp’s obsessive interest in contemporary philosophers. Maybe they can set us straight? In a series of paintings where he brings these philosophers together, depicting them in banal situations like at the ping-pong table, in a wheelchair or with a laptop on fire, he probably already answered that question.
