Mark Steinmetz 1961

Lives in Athens, Georgia. Works in Athens, Georgia.

The American photographer Mark Steinmetz (1961) finds the subjects for his thematic projects in his immediate surroundings: landscapes, portraits and animals, with a particular focus on children and young adults. He always photographs them in the same uninhibited way, in black and white with natural light and an eye for poetic details. Steinmetz does not like finished stories and prefers to answer questions rather than answer them. His work is open to different interpretations and his oeuvre bears witness to intelligence, patience and genuine interest. In his eyes, photography is an extension of literature. He feels influenced by writers like William Faulkner, from the southern states of the US.
