Andrew Bush

Andrew Bush (1956)

Lives in Los Angeles, Californië. Works in Los Angeles, Californië.

Andrew Bush graduated from Yale University with an MFA in Photography in 1982 and has been pursuing the Vector Portraits series since he moved to Los Angeles in 1989. Due to the vastness of the region, the residents of Los Angeles spend a lot of time behind the wheel in an air-conditioned living room on wheels, which provides for an intriguing mixture of public and private space. Bush drove through the streets and over the Los Angeles highways with a medium format camera attached to the passenger seat. Each time he drove right next to another car Bush operated the camera by means of a cable release. As a result, Bush's color photographs all have the same lay out. The photo frame catches the car, the side window forms a frame around the driver. Within this double framework we see curious combinations of drivers and car brands, of ages and colors. A feast for the voyeuristic eye: the motorists ar unaware of the camera are caught focussing at the road, composing their thoughts, having conversations with passengers or listening to their car radios. Andrew Bush's photography has been exhibited extensively in solo and group shows, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Davis Museum and Cultural Center at Wellesley College (Wellesley, Massachusetts) and Staatliche Kunsthalle (Baden-Baden, Germany). Photographer Andrew Bush's work is held in prominent public collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The George Eastman House (Rochester, New York) and The Victoria & Albert Museum (London). Andrew Bush currently resides in Los Angeles.
