I was born in Hollywood, 1946. We lived in several communities during my elementary school years, Burbank, West Hollywood, and finally in 1957, Sherman Oaks, which was directly adjacent to the city of Van Nuys. I attended both Van Nuys Junior High School and Van Nuys High School. Our family home was near the corner of Magnolia Boulevard and Van Nuys Boulevard, and our back fence was no more than 150 feet from Van Nuys Boulevard. That was really about as close to that commercial street that anyone could live. I saw it all.
Although I did shoot some photos earlier, I began my serious interest in photography in 1969 while attending California State University Northridge, CSUN. By luck, a new fine art photographer, Edwin Sievers, had just taken over as head of the Department of Photography at the college. Ed’s first second year class had some very dedicated young people including Mike Mandel and John Divola (Google them both). I was lucky enough to proceed among some talented and committed individuals. We are still in touch. The Van Nuys series of images was a project I accomplished over the summer of 1972, about a year after I finished my work at CSUN. It was a series that needed to be shot.
I moved to Hawaii in 1974 where i continued to work in photography, and in other areas of artwork—etched glass, fine woodwork and other artistic endeavors. I moved back to the Mainland in 1991, and eventually settled in Washington State, where I live now. I still shoot, and I am currently working at organizing several series of images from both Hawaii and Washington. Stay tuned.
