Simone Bennett (1978)

Lives in Hilversum. Works in Hilversum.

Simone Bennett is a visual artist who works with film, photography and prints. A recurring theme in her work is the disruption of everyday life. Bennett uses the cinematic language to tell her stories, shining a light on dark places in society. Simone’ photographs portrays people who seem to be detached from each other. The powerlessness of being stuck in your surroundings, not able to change the situation you are in. Longing to be together but looking the other way. The moment when we stand still, closing ourselves off to a world in which we don’t feel we belong anymore. The series reads like a film sequence where all the portrayed sing their own song. The locations chosen for the photographs are Simone’s direct surroundings and the people portrayed are her friends and family members.

The film is shot in one-take on 35mm, the soundtrack was made by Alexander Hacke (einstürzende neubauten). The film was made possible by the Netherlands Film Fund.
