Chen Xingye's most recent works reflect on human sensory perception, an interest that originated from the artist's experience during Covid in Beijing last year. After a long period of quarantine and travel restrictions, people not only suffered from long-term mental stress but also unbearable physical difficulties.
Affected by Covid, Chen Xingye has limited his color palette mainly to black and white. Other main colors are red and blue, which derive from a famous scene in the movie The Matrix (1999), in which the main character must choose between a red pill (which would show him the unknown truth) or a blue pill (which would leave him in mundane reality). Furthermore, classic figures from Japanese and Western culture feature in his drawings, reflecting his upbringing between these two cultures. Through the rhythm of creating his work, Xingye gradually gains a clearer self-image and shapes his unique way of perceiving the world.
