Joke Raes (b. 1983, Belgium) is a Belgian artist, graduate of the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Ghent. Her ceramic sculptures and installations bear witness to the intricate tensions between nature and humanity, particularly in the interplay of growth and decay. These fragile ecosystems invite a prolonged reflection. Her works, described as imbued with “love water” or suspended between acts of “revealing and concealing,” evoke a luscious, enigmatic world. While their organic forms appear naturally emergent, closer inspection reveals surfaces marked by an obsessive attention to detail—a testament to her technical mastery and aesthetic precision. Rae’s generative process parallels the exhibition’s interrogation of perception, transforming ceramic forms to destabilise the boundary between natural growth and a romantic, meticulous construction.
Raes’ international career spans investigation of biodiversity, interdependence, and environmental change during residencies in the Peruvian Amazon and the Red Sea, and exhibitions in the Van Abbemuseum (Netherlands) and Kyoto Art Center (Japan).
