Bas Coengracht (Maastricht, 1974) lives and works in Amsterdam. His work revolves around the human figure, depicting individuals navigating landscapes. These are raw images painted in a poetic color palette, with each character existing in their own world. The compositions originate from contemporary images, which are transformed through painting, overpainting, and the addition of human figures sourced from other visual materials. In this way, both subject and visual language take on a unique direction, emphasizing themes of migration, introspection, and the sublime.
All works are acrylic on linen. The paint is applied using both brushes and large spatulas—sometimes thin and fluid, at other times mixed with an acrylic modeling paste to create texture.
