Annesas Appel (1978) generally takes everyday things as the starting point for her visual work. She focuses her attention on our direct living environment, a world with which we are familiar, such as consumer articles, maps, a laptop, a bookcase, or clothing. These form part and parcel of our routines and we take them for granted. Annesas Appel extractsthese things from the context in which they are familiar to us. She analyses objects or images and then subjects them to a system of her own to achieve a new visual representation. Appel’s actions, from observation to the final work, may beunderstood as ways of making something her own; her own way of mapping elements of a greater whole, such as a laptop or world map. The system she uses must arise logically from the information that is contained within the objects and entities. Dissecting elements of a greater whole and placingthem in systems leads to a serial work that is shown to full advantage as an installation, a portfolio but also in book form.

Alongside her conceptual approach, Appel pays particular attention to the presentation and design of her work. The intensive-looking earthy colours that arise in the work process are remarkable, as are the elegantly appropriate types of paper that she selects. “The works radiate so much serenity and sensitivity to materials and colour”, writes Anneke Oele (2015, p 38) “that the path towards the work completelydisappears from view. The final work has its own autonomy and meaning.”

The studio of... Annesas Appel

Annesas Appel has a studio in the loft of her living room in Haarlem. At one of the many tables, she works on projects with a completely unique logic. For Layered Landscape, her current exhibition at dudokdegroot, she linked the 10 colours of the Munsell colour system to the numbers 0 through 9, assigning each number its own colour. She overlapped all the numbers one by one to see what mixed colours would emerge. "It’s always a surprise that 10 fixed shapes and colours can result in so many different shapes and colour variations."

layered base With the world of numbers and the 10 colors (derived from the Munsell color system) as a starting point, I am creating new visual language. The specific shape of the numbers are the basic grid. It provides structure and gives me the freedom to build on; what happens if I overlap them, what shapes and colors become visible? What landscape arises in the excisions of the image? In LAYERED BASE the numbers 0 to 9 are superimposed. Within this stack, the numbers 00 to 99 are highlighted. Each print is a different 2-digit number. Because every number has their own color, a new blend of colors is created in the overlapping areas. The book contains all images of the numbers 00-99. Content: 10 booklets with prints of the numbers 00-99 organized by color. Binding: Japanese folded, cold glued, handmade. Printing: Digital. Paper: Shoji 48 grams. Size: 21 x 28 cm. The Linen box is made by boox.space, haarlem Size of the box: 23 x 30,4 x 6 cm. Edition: 10 + 1 a.p. Year of publication: 2023
