Dennis Rudolph is a multimedia artist working in performance, video, painting, graphics and writing. His artistic practice derives its primal momentum from a melancholic reworking of the heritage of western culture, making classical historical genres available for a contemporary artistic approach.

Rudolph studied at the Universität der Künste, Berlin, the Repin-Academy in St. Petersburg and the Language and Culture Institute in Beijing. Recent exhibitions include the Museum der Arbeit Hamburg; DTLA Film Festival, Los Angeles; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Moscow International Biennale for Young Art; CAC Bretigny, France; Nayerische Staatsoper, Germany; Kunstverein Arnsberg; Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin. Since 2014, Rudolph runs the exhibition space, residency and studio State of the Art in Berlin.

Dennis Rudolph, Mark Titchner

As a young artist, he employs a highly recognizable visual language that is heavily loaded, through references to, among other things, the Nazi past, the Roman Empire and European mythologies. He combines the heavy bombast of Richard Wagner with the romance of Caspar David Friedrich. Rudolph follows an image tradition that traces back to the 19th century and even beyond.

Review of 'Fallen Angels' in Het Parool

"...Wie de nieuwste ontwikkeling - misschien wel de grootste schilderkunstige innovatie sinds de verftube - wil zien, moet nu naar Upstream Gallery. De Duitse multimediakunstenaar Dennis Rudolph heeft voor zijn tentoonstelling Fallen Angels gebruik gemaakt van de virual reality software Google TiltBrush. Het resultaat: driedimensionale schilderkunst. Die kun je overigens alleen bekijken met een iPad voorzien van speciale app... ...Pak de iPad erbij en de verf knalt van het doek. De engelen veranderen in dynamische figuren en het licht straalt over de rand van het werk, zo de galerie in. De paradox is dat de beperking van het spieraam wordt opgeheven en het beeld verrijkt, maar dat dat alleen te zien is via een scherm... ...En het moet worden gezegd: dit verandert de kijk op schilderen. Letterlijk zelfs. Want als je eenmaal de virtuele laag gezien hebt, kun je de platte, traditionele afbeeldingen niet meer zien zonder een mentale echo van de driedimensionale toevoeging. In Annunciations of Techne gaat de kunstenaar nog een stapje verder. Hier zijn de schilderijen geïntegreerd in een virtual reality voorstelling. Met een Hololens voor je ogen maken engelen zich los uit decors van sciencefictionfilms als Mad Max en Interstellar voor een barokke choregrafie door de ruimte. Het is absoluut spectaculair,..
