Johan Kleinjan graduated as an illustrator, but in recent years has increasingly focused on making free work. After working intensively for 10 years in the Antistrot art collective, he started working in guest studios in order to create more work based on his environment. He worked in Kronstadt, Russia and Taipei, Taiwan, among others.
Johan's exhibition in 2018 in Gallery Untitled is the result of a period of work in a guest studio of the Mondriaan Fund in Beijing and in Chongqing, China. During his stay in China, Johan investigated new ways of making work on location. In addition to new paintings and drawings, this also resulted in a kinetic 3D work, a performance, video work, and a book with drawings that he made of Chinese people eating during his lunch and dinner in restaurants. In 2017, seven pages of drawings from this book were pre-published in the Volkskrant Magazine.
