Luuk Bode lives and works in Rotterdam. He makes paintings, drawings, murals and spatial work. His work is influenced by the metropolitan environment: angular skylines, vertical markings, street art. Bode graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam as an illustrator, and as such he worked for clients such as Rails, Coca Cola and Golden Earring. His earlier work was figurative, strongly rooted in pop culture. Pop icons and street culture were important sources of inspiration. Bode continues to explore the characteristics of these elements enlarged, making his works of art increasingly monumental and abstract.
The great painters of the 20th century increasingly play a role in his most recent work. This has created a visual language of hard, geometric shapes, with little room for doubt. It is a world of strength and vitality. Bode's work has been shown in, among others, the Kunsthal, MAMA Showroom, P3 in London, La Luz De Jesus gallery in Los Angeles, and the Dakar Biennale in Senegal.
