Violence, repression, manipulation; the uncomfortable realities of contemporary life are exposed in Mihael Milunović’s enticing creations.
Born in Belgrade in 1967, Milunović grew up in an artistic family environment. Both his father and grandfather were well-known Serbian artists and his mother is a renowned Croatian sculptor. Milunović’s early experiences playing in his parents’ studio, his interest in geography and machinery, or paintings by the likes of Titian, Velazquez or De Chiricio would all have a lasting effect on his work.
Milunović attended the Belgrade Faculty of Fine Arts, the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he studied in the classes of professors Vladimir Veličković, Marina Abramović and Tony Brown, among others. Remarked, he became the Laureate
of the Foundation Renoir (worked and lived in Pierre-August Renoir’s atelier).
His work encompasses a wide range of disciplines, from painting, drawing, photography and video artworks through to large-scale sculptures and installations.
By decontextualizing everyday objects, symbols or situations, Milunović provokes unease in the observer, a blend of alienation and curiosity.
Since the mid 90s, Milunović has participated in numerous exhibitions across Europe.
His works are featured in prestigious museum collections including:
MUMOK –Ludwig Museum, Vienna; Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade; Coleccion Solo, Madrid; Deji Museum, Nanjing; Collection Moet & Chandon / LVMH, France; National
Gallery of Bulgaria, Collection Wiener Städtische, Austria; Palazzo Forti, Verona; Musée d’Art et d’Industrie, Saint-Étienne etc.
As of September 2025, Mihael Milunović has presented 56 solo exhibitions worldwide, including 5 individual museum shows, and has participated in 84 group exhibitions, among them 23 museum group shows.
His work has been featured in curated exhibitions alongside renowned artists such as Herman Nitsch, Jan Fabre, Dennis Oppenheim, Ilya Kabakov, Roman Opalka, Park Seo-Bo, Mounir Fatmi, Barthélémy Toguo, Tony Cragg, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Wim Delvoye, Shigeru Ban, Neo Rauch, Gérard Garouste, Marina Abramović, Pedro Cabrita Reis,William
Kentridge, Sean Scully, Kiki Smith, Sophie Calle, Jasper Johns, Morris Louis, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Cy Twombly, Franz West, Tom Wesselmann, and Rirkrit Tiravanija, among others.
