Ronald Zuurmond paints — or rather works with paint, with which he depicts landscapes, still lifes and (self) portraits. Overpainting and “underpainting”, the image making process is continuous. Paint is smeared directly from the tube onto the canvas, applied in blobs with a brush or pressed against the canvas with a palette knife. Like an archaeologist of his own work, he searches and exposes underlying layers, in what he calls ‘continuing to rummage’.
Ronald Zuurmond (1964) lives and works in Breda. He studied sociology at Tilburg University. After graduating, he went to the Tilburg art academy. He left it after a year and then took lessons with the hyper-realistic painter Jan Beutener. Zuurmond had solo exhibitions at a.o. Museum Jan Cunen (Oss), Museum Henriette Polak (Zutphen) and Borzo (Amsterdam).
