Gianin Conrad studied fine arts at the Zurich University of the Arts, the Berlin University of the Arts and the FHNW/HGK (Master of Fine Arts). In addition, he is a trained stone sculptor. Among others, he exhibited at the Kunsthalle Winterthur, the Kunsthalle Engländerbau in Vaduz (FL) and the Kunsthalle Basel. He participated in many exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad and his works are represented in various private and institutional art collections. His artistic practice is broad; active mainly in the field of installation, he also realizes space-consuming, situational projects.
Gianin Conrad opposes traditional forms of artistic presentation. Manifesting tangible and intangible spaces with unusual materials is part of his creative vocabulary. Assembling multicolored folding wooden measuring meters into relief-like images is part of his artistic practice.
In Conrad's folding meter reliefs the viewer is not able to ignore the embossed scales and numerals. The cut-out pictorial motifs are reminiscent of vivid comic panels in their concise contours and reduced color palette. The right-angled bracing of the individual wooden segments creates a pixelated look and invite further inspection. Conrad builds a juxtaposition of different technique in visual optimization: on the one hand, the
search for an even better “look”, while on the other hand, the longing for the essence in art - however, everything always with a dash of irony and humor.
