Giuseppe Lo Schiavo, also known as GLOS, is an Italian-born visual artist and researcher currently based between Milan and London. His work navigates the intersection of technology, science, and art history, evoking ancient cultures while imagining speculative futures.
After collaborating with the MUSE Museum of Science of Trento on a pioneering synthetic biology project within the international research program ACDC, Lo Schiavo introduced the concept of Synthetic Photography in 2022, a new approach to image-making that employs digitally crafted, meticulously constructed processes, offering a contemporary alternative to traditional camera-based photography.
Lo Schiavo’s practice spans various media, including immersive installations in public spaces featuring neuro devices, kinetic lights, and 3D projections, extending his exploration of synthetic realities into multi-sensory environments.
His research and practice engage with themes such as evolutionary biology, transhumanism, and ecocentrism.
Giuseppe Lo Schiavo’s contributions extend beyond conventional boundaries: he became the first artist-in-residence at UCL’s Microbiology Lab in 2020, won the 2021 European BioArt Challenge awarded by MUSE, and was recognised by Domus in 2023 as a prototype of the modern-day artist. In 2024, he was awarded the 23rd Premio Cairo, one of the most prestigious contemporary art prizes in Italy. Through his exploration of synthetic realities and emerging aesthetics, Lo Schiavo continues to propose transformative perspectives within contemporary art.
