Tamara Dees (b. 1971, Terneuzen) lives and works in Zeeland, where the sea remains her constant source of inspiration. Raised in a family of shipbuilders, she developed an early fascination with the maritime world.
Her work explores the tension between presence and absence, form and emptiness — often through ships that have lost their function or exist only as memory. These absent or abandoned vessels invite quiet reflection, leaving no room for escape.
Projects such as Tor Magnolia, a video installation documenting a container ship journey from Terneuzen to Ghent, and her research into the former TSM shipyard, reflect her deep engagement with Zeeland’s maritime history. Her work heightens awareness of the vast scale of the world and the transience of human presence within it.
