Luc Tuymans born in 1958 in Mortsel (BE), lives and works in Antwerp (BE).
Luc Tuymans is considered one of the most significant European painters of his generation and he has been an enduring influence on younger and emerging artists. Born and raised in Antwerp, where he lives and works, Tuymans is an inheritor to the vast tradition of Northern European painting. At the same time, as a child of the 1950s, his relationship to the medium is understandably influenced by photography, television, and cinema. Interested in the lingering effects of World War II on the lives of Europeans, Tuymans explores issues of history and memory, as well as the relationship between photography and painting, using a muted palette to create canvases that are simultaneously withholding and disarmingly stark. Drawing on imagery from photography, television, and film, his distinctive compositions make ingenious use of cropping, close-ups, framing, and Luc Tuymans sequencing, offering fresh perspectives on the medium of painting, as well as larger cultural issues.

Luc Tuymans: Downfall
To look at and into a painting of Belgian artist Luc Tuymans is to encounter the visual world as though born of abstraction. Of ice-cream coloured textures that serve to illustrate the banality of brutality, that like his contemporary Michaël Borremans, come into contact with the canvas as though an aromatic acid. The act of allowing oneself to stare at a figure silently suffocating, or to look into an execution room, Gaskamer 1986 (that Tuymans explains as similar to its history, of it being branded a 'shower room' cum gas chamber), can be likened to treading on the graves of the dead - of turning idle curiosity into a perverse act of criminality.

Painting the Banality of Evil
Tuymans's paintings are shot through with the kind of subtle beauty one finds in seashells when the glow of the sun has diminished and the sheen of the water has dried. Their faded sumptuousness nonetheless elicits a kind of consummate chill. Sometimes called the "Tuymans effect," this affect of beauty mixed with difficulty, coldness, restraint, and distance has several sources.
