Working with multiples is a significant aspect of Pepermans' oeuvre, resulting from extensive experimentation with various media.
The Journal Brut series comprises three editions and two artist proofs. It is an experimental diary of pictures that Pepermans made during his numerous travels. These images consist of mostly mundane items, such as a small aircraft on the screen in the passenger seat ahead of him, a close-up of a soup ladle, or a random street scene. They are enlarged and printed in black and white on Plexiglas. Pepermans applies a background in acrylic on canvas in a different shade for each edition beneath that transparent layer.
Through 'modifications,' Pepermans enters into a dialogue with the famous graphic artist Masereel. Pepermans adapted some proofs of a series of silkscreens published posthumously in 1983-1984 by Ronny Van de Velde, which were blow-ups of small original drawings by Masereel.
The Palais de Tokyo series, consisting of 25 editions, is based on photographs taken at the museum of the same name in Paris. The scratches on the images come from the plastic that was between the lens and the people portrayed. The editions are inkjet prints, finished with polymer varnish.
In the ongoing series, Candies Mixed media #edition 7 + 2AP, Pepermans employs a recurring basic sketch, often derived from earlier work, which is put on different backgrounds. The multiple is then furnished with cast resin.
